Pest Control Methods

Our team of professional pest control experts use several methods to safely and humanely remove unwanted pests from your home or business. The exact method we use will depend on the type of infestation you have.

We deploy the following modern pest control methods…

Side View Of Exterminator In Workwear Spraying Pesticide In KitchenBIOLOGICAL CONTROL
This is the most natural method available and eliminates your pests without affecting the rest of the environment. With this method, the technician will lay biological control agents such as predators, parasitoids and pathogens to specifically target the pest.

This method is best used as an ongoing management strategy to help control pests and eliminates the use of pesticides and poison baits which may affect other animals. It is less successful at eliminating pests which have nested, however.

MECHANICAL CONTROL
With this technique, our pest control experts will lay traps to capture the pest. The most common of these is the mousetrap, but there are many types of trap available for several types of species.

We can deploy catch and kill or humane catch and release traps depending on the species. With humane traps, the animal is captured alive before being released elsewhere.

PESTICIDES
Pesticides are the most common form of pest control. This type of control method can be applied as a powder or spray and is often used to remove insect species such as bed bugs and ants which have nested.

We use commercial grade pesticides which are applied in several ways including fogging, fumigation and spraying. Using these methods care needs to be taken to ensure the area is safe for occupation once the pesticide has been applied.

POISONED BAIT
Poisoned bait is one of the oldest and most effective methods for catching vermin. While this method is effective it should only be used as a last resort, due to the risk of other animals being affected.

For this reason, we use mechanical control methods because traps can be targeted at specific species. We will only use poisoned bait as a last resort and only if the risk of other animals being affected is low.

HEAT TREATMENT
Heat treatment is an effective treatment for insect species such as bed bugs and cockroaches. These species prefer to live in temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees. Heat treatment raises the temperature to 50 degrees which is lethal to such species.

Because this method does not require the use of pesticides it is suitable for use in areas where the public has access or where food is produced. This method is also very efficient, allowing the room to be used immediately after treatment.

Types of Common Pests: Birds, Crawling & Flying Insects & Rodents

BIRD CONTROL

Everyone loves wild birds – but they can soon become a nuisance in public areas and can spread germs and disease. Birds will often nest in bridges or on building ledges or rooftops, leaving droppings everywhere which spread diseases and can soon create a public health risk. Luckily our experienced technicians have the knowledge and expertise required to ensure a bird problem is soon under control.

Pigeons

Pigeons are known to carry several diseases including tuberculosis and salmonella. They also have allergens which can really cause problems for humans. Pigeons can become a major pest problem in city centres, living off scraps of food dropped by passing members of the public. Our technicians can provide various proofing methods to prevent pigeons nesting on buildings and ledges including netting and spikes as well as shooting and trapping problem birds where required. It’s important to note that in order to remove a pigeon nest a specialist license is required so it’s best to call in the professionals.

Seagulls

Seagulls are not only a problem for coastal towns; they often fly inland and can cause big problems in urban areas. It is important to note that once it is nesting season it’s actually illegal to remove or disturb a seagull nest without a specialist license and permission so it’s always better to consult with an expert on this. They can often build nests in high up and hard to reach areas and can be territorial, attacking anyone who comes too close to their nesting area. They can also soon become a problem for people in towns and cities, helping themselves to food from people who are eating outdoors. Our technicians can employ preventative measures such as netting and spikes as well as the use of birds of prey to ensure seagulls do not nest in your area. As well as this we can obtain licenses to safely remove seagull nests where required and have the necessary equipment to safely reach their nests. Trapping can also be used where necessary.

FLYING INSECTS

Wasps

Nobody wants to find a wasp nest on their property; wasp stings are painful and they can often sting without being provoked. Wasps usually nest in holes around the home or in the ground, and are attracted to a variety of different foods – not just sweets! The best course of action if you are finding there are lots of wasps in your garden is to watch them to see if you can spot where their nest might be, and then call in the professionals. A wasp nest should never be ignored – they will not just go away on their own! Instead, wasps will continue to be active while the weather is warm enough for them. They will mostly die off as the weather gets colder, but if a nest survives the queen will produce up to twenty new queens who will all build nests nearby. This means the single nest that is a problem this summer can soon become a major issue next summer. Wasp nests can also grow to the size of a beach ball. If they have started off in a small hole in your wall or similar, they will chew through whatever is in their way to ensure their nest can grow – and this can be bad news for your home. Wasps have been known to cause structural damage to a property. It’s important therefore to get a wasp nest dealt with by a professional as soon as you notice it.

Moths

Moths can cause damage to material, including clothing, carpets and curtains. Many people don’t realise that there are also moths that live on food and so can cause problems in areas where food is stored. When getting rid of a moth infestation it’s important to remove all stages of the life cycle: adults; nymphs; larva and eggs. Our technicians can use heat treatment, freezing treatment, steam treatment or chemical treatment to remove moths and will take a targeted and personalised approach to ensure your home is moth free in no time.

Bees

Honey bees are protected, and we always do everything we can to remove them without harming them. If you get too close to a bee nest they may see you as a threat and swarm you – and this can be dangerous. Never attempt to remove bees yourself as stings can cause severe reactions and even anaphylactic shock. Bees can often choose to nest in cavity walls, roof soffits or bushes. If they are in an inaccessible place we have no option but to exterminate – but otherwise will always opt to remove rather than kill. There are many different species of bee and many are not protected. This is important to bear in mind when it comes to removing nests and swarms. We always attempt to re-home bee swarms and to remove any bumblebee nest without harming them wherever possible.

Hornets

Hornets are a variety of wasp and can be very dangerous. They tend to nest in smaller numbers than a wasp nest, but they are typically larger and their stings can cause more damage. Hornets look like large, angry wasps and if you suspect you have a hornet nest on your property it is important to call in the professionals as soon as possible. One of our expert technicians can be with you quickly to assess the situation and advise on the best course of action. It is important not to try and tackle the problem yourself as hornet stings can be serious and you may find yourself in difficulty.

Flies

There are several different types of fly that can become a problem in and around your home. These include blue bottles, cluster flies, fruit flies and mosquitoes. Bluebottles are often found around rubbish as they live off rotting flesh or food, but cluster flies will often be found in loft spaces or cavity walls, laying their eggs in earthworm colonies. Fruit flies are associated with fermenting fruit but are also attracted to other sugary foods and even beer. Mosquitoes can be particularly problematic because they bite. In the UK they don’t usually spread disease, but nobody enjoys being bitten by a mosquito. Our technicians can be on hand quickly with a variety of different methods for eradicating fly infestations. This will usually involve fogging treatment or fumigating the affected area, but it depends on which type of fly is causing the problem.

RODENTS

Mice

Mice can gnaw through all manner of different substances in their quest for food to eat and nesting materials and this can be both inconvenient and damaging to your home. As well as this they spread diseases and are a pest you will want dealt with quickly and efficiently. They may be small, but mice can cover large areas in their search for food. They can fit through tiny gaps and can also run up walls making them very tricky to locate and get rid of. Luckily our technicians are all trained professionals with experience in these things. We will assess the situation before creating a tailored response to remove your mice infestation quickly.

Rats

Rats are every householder’s nightmare. They can pose a serious risk to health as well as damaging homes – and they breed very quickly. If you have a rat infestation you will want to get it resolved as quickly as you can before it spreads. The best and quickest way to get rid of rats on your property is by calling in the professionals. Our technicians are well versed in the habits of rats and will be able to identify how they are gaining access to your property, laying bait and resolving the problem quickly. Learn more about Rat Control.

Squirrels

Squirrels are very territorial; they will protect their nests at all costs, which becomes a major concern when they have made their nest on your property. Grey squirrels are actually a pest and not native to the UK. It is therefore illegal for a pest controller to catch and release them; they must be exterminated. Of course our technicians will use humane methods to do this, but it is important to call in the professionals for this.

Glis Glis

You must hold a licence from Natural England in order to control glis glis; this is not something you can take on yourself. A glis glis looks like a large mouse with a squirrel tail. They are rodents and move very quickly. When they are not moving, they are gnawing with their large front teeth. This can spell trouble for your home if you get an infestation. They can be very noisy and annoying too. Our technicians are here to help; we can safely remove your glis glis using specialist traps and then work on preventing re-infestation by proofing your home.

Garden Moles

Moles can tunnel up to eighteen feet per hour, creating an intricate system of tunnels under your lawn. Of course they don’t just stay underground and will often pop up, causing damage to your lawn and plants. Our technicians can help by laying expert traps that will quickly and humanely dispatch the mole. We can also use specialist gassing techniques to ensure tunnels have no live moles.

Foxes

Foxes have begun moving into urban areas in their search for food – but they also have a habit of marking their territory, and anyone who has come across their droppings will tell you they are a big nuisance. If you have noticed any holes in your flowerbeds or lawns this may be foxes foraging for worms and insect larvae. Our technicians can help you by installing deterrents and proofing to keep foxes away from your property. We can also provide humane traps.

Rabbits

Rabbits can be a real problem for those living in rural areas; they can quickly eat their way through a vegetable patch, and of course they breed quickly too. You may also spot tell-tale signs of burrowing in your lawn or damage to tree bark. Once a rabbit sees your garden as a place to find food, they will keep coming back again and again. There are deterrents available, and it’s always wise to ensure your fencing is well maintained in order to keep them out. If you have a rabbit problem it is usually best to get the experts involved. Our technicians can help you to get rid of the rabbits from your garden quickly and humanely.

CRAWLING INSECTS

For infestations of insects, our technicians often use heat treatment. This is a chemical-free method of pest control whereby the temperature is raised to 50 degrees for two hours in order to effectively kill off the infestation. It is important to have a professional provide this treatment however, as it is imperative that the heat is on the insect and not just the area being treated. As your local experts in pest control, we have provided heat treatment for insect infestations numerous times and will be happy to help.

Ants

Finding ants on your property can be a real nuisance. They often seem to spring up from nowhere and once they’re there, they can be hard to get rid of. There are many products available on the market to get rid of ants; some are more effective than others. Our customers often come to us when they have tried a few products and have had no luck. The problem is that as well as killing the ants, you also need to find and kill their entire nest. The nest houses the queen as well as hundreds of larvae and cocoons – and these must be eradicated to avoid the nest continuing to thrive. Our technicians have a great deal of experience in this area and will talk through your options with you.

Cockroaches

It can be very distressing to find that you have an infestation of cockroaches in your home. They are known to carry several diseases including salmonella and dysentery and can cause gastroenteritis. Cockroaches have also been linked to exacerbating conditions such as asthma and eczema – so this is definitely something you will want to resolve quickly. They can also spread very quickly between neighbouring properties so it’s important to ensure a cockroach problem is dealt with quickly and efficiently. Our technicians will provide a targeted and customised treatment to ensure your cockroach problem is eliminated, and to prevent any future infestation.

Fleas

Many people don’t realise that it’s possible to have a problem with fleas even if you don’t have any pets. If a previous inhabitant of your home kept dogs or cats they may have left fleas behind – but you can also get fleas from other animals including rabbits, squirrels, rats and mice. Fleas are parasites, meaning that it lives on a host organism – either you or your pet. Bites can be a major concern as they can soon result in an itchy rash. Many people are also allergic to flea saliva which can make things worse. Luckily we are always on hand with safe and effective treatments to ensure we get rid of all fleas quickly and with minimal upheaval for you.

Spiders

You might think spiders are just one of those things we all have to deal with, and thankfully most of the spiders in the UK are not poisonous or considered dangerous. We have seen an increasing demand for help with spider infestations in recent years though, and many which are not native to the UK such as the false widow and Brazilian wandering spider are cause for concern. Most spider infestations will begin in the cooler autumn and winter months when they will look to find somewhere a little warmer to nest. Although they are most likely to be harmless, people still do not want them in their home and so we are able to provide targeted treatments to remove both spiders and their nests.

Ladybirds

Harlequin ladybirds are not native to the UK and while you may not consider ladybirds to be a pest, anyone who has had to deal with an infestation will tell you otherwise. The harlequin ladybird is now recognised as one of the most invasive species on the planet, and when they can’t get enough food they have been known to bite humans. Our technicians will use the most up to date methods to safely eradicate a ladybird infestation from your home, ensuring all cracks and crevices are sprayed to ensure they cannot return.

Woodworm

Woodworm is a term that actually covers several different types of insect, all of which bore into wood. They are insects or beetles, and will lay larvae in the wood which then feed on the wood from the inside, weakening any structure and leading to serious damage and major cause for concern. Our technicians can use either heat treatment, freezing treatment or chemical treatment to kill off all species of woodworm and ensure your floorboards or other wooden structures are safe.

Silverfish

Silverfish thrive in humid conditions, so they are often to be found in bathrooms or kitchens. They can be very unhygienic, especially if there are lots of them in your property. Because they enjoy humid conditions they can often be a sign of damp so in order to protect your home against silverfish any underlying damp problem must also be resolved. We can help with a silverfish infestation, taking advantage of the fact they are naturally attracted to glucose. Using sugar-based baits combined with specialist sprays and powders we can soon eradicate silverfish from your home.

Caterpillars

Caterpillar problems are more common than you might think – especially the box tree caterpillar which lives on the leaves of the box hedge and can quickly cause a lot of damage. They have no natural predator which means the only way to get rid of them is to call professional pest control services. Our technicians will investigate your situation before providing a targeted and customised response to ensure all infected box trees/hedges are safe from these pests.
